BlankGreetings:

The Oregon IEEE Consultants' Network (ORCNET) meets regularly on the fourth Thursday of each month (this week!). Details of our next meeting are below.

( NOTE TO MEMBERS - This meeting will include a very brief business meeting to elect our 2008 slate of Officers. )

WHAT - Space Based Solar Power
This month we are pleased to welcome Mr. Charles F. Radley, AFAIAA, EIT, MIEEE, for an informed discussion of Space Based Solar Power (SBSP).

In October 2007 Mr. Radley was listed as a co-contributor to the report on Space Based Solar Power (SBSP) released by the Dept of Defense - National Security Space Office: http://spacesolarpower.wordpress.com/2007/10/10/sbsp-interim-assessment-release-01-is-published/. This report concludes that SBSP is a promising clean renewable solution to global problems of energy supply, security and climate change.

Mr. Radley will present for us the key findings and conclusions in the report.

WHO - Mr. Charles F. Radley

Mr. Radley is an Associate Fellow of the AIAA, Vice President of the Moon Society, and a former regional director of the National Space Society. He is also a diehard SF fan, and bridges the gap between popular appreciation of the universe and the "nuts and bolts" of rocket science. He was a member of the subcontractor teams for the Galileo and Magellan space probes, the International Space Station, Spacelab-MSL-1 and several communications satellite projects. Mr. Radley currently consults in software engineering and aerospace, and invites discussion at his blog: http://telepower.wordpress.com.

WHEN
Thursday, Jan 24, 2008, 6:00 PM to chat & eat, meeting begins at 7:00 PM (approx.).

MORE ABOUT
Solar Power from Space
In the November 2007 issue of the Oregon IEEE BEEEP newsletter, Mr. Radley published an article entitled: "Space Based Solar Power – Is it Déjà vu? Or is it really taking shape?" Solar power from spacecraft can be beamed down to users on the Earth via wireless power transmission based on microwaves or lasers. Although initially capital-intensive, projected trends in energy prices and concerns about climate change are making this approach increasingly attractive. Once the technical risks have been retired, the SBSP option could become competitive with terrestrial renewable systems such as hydro-electric power and solar, without the environmental impact and with unlimited capacity potential.
