SEPTEMBER ORCNET MEETING - PRESENTATION

Ms. Annabelle Pratt*, PhD, with Intel's Corporate Technology Group, will discuss 400 VDC Power Distribution for Energy-Efficient Data Centers
A very large data center requires around 10 MW of power, and this is expected to increase to 50 MW in the future. Typically, less than half of the power reaches the compute load - the rest is lost in power conversion and distribution. Traditionally, power distribution is at 480 VAC in data centers, but 400 VDC distribution can improve efficiency and lower component costs.

Intel® Corporation, HP/EYP MCF, and Emerson Network Power, conducted an in-depth case study of 400 VDC distribution, comparing the costs and benefits vs 480 VAC distribution. The study showed that a 7% energy savings can be achieved, with a 15% electrical equipment capital cost savings, a 33% space savings, and a 200% improvement in reliability.

Remaining challenges include the establishment of Standards and the availability of commercial 400 VDC UPS systems and servers. Small scale demonstrations have been built.

More information is available at http://wiki.eeconsult.org:80/index.cgi?NextPresentation.

*Annabelle Pratt is a Power Research Engineer at the Systems Technology Lab within Intel’s Corporate Technology Group. She has been with Intel since 2004. She earned BSEE and MSEE degrees from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, and a Ph.D. from OSU. Ms. Pratt is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
