BlankGreetings -

The Oregon IEEE Consultants' Network (ORCNET) meets regularly on the fourth Thursday of each month.

FEBRUARY ORCNET MEETING

Details of our next meeting are below.

WHAT - A PRESENTATION BY MS. SUSAN FEDERICI, Ph.D.

Open Innovation – Benefits and Challenges

"Open Innovation" is the global exchange of Intellectual Property (IP) across company boundaries.

Susan will discuss Open Innovation's potential upsides and downsides for your company.

Organizations with (or without) internal Research & Development (R&D) efforts may seek competitive advantage by acquiring new technologies from others. Although transfers of technology and know-how through mergers and acquisitions have always existed, the market for buying and selling only IP has increased dramatically in the last decade.

Open Innovation minimizes the business exchange. Sellers generate revenue by transferring or licensing IP for which they have no internal application. Buyers need only accept the technology - not the people, debt and other encumbrances of the seller.

Open Innovation can have downsides. Participants may unintentionally lose competitive advantage if the use and application of the acquired technology is not well understood and defined by legal agreement. Scientific and technical employees of the buyer may be called upon to swallow their pride and complete the development of a potentially blockbusting product brought in from the outside, while those of the seller can be disappointed by foregone opportunity. Buyers must also consider the seller's longevity - what will happen if the company providing the technology fails before the transfer is complete?

Join us on Thursday for an interesting exploration of these and other issues surrounding Open Innovation and its possible impacts on your company.

WHO - OUR PRESENTER
Susan is the Principal of the Federici Business Group, a Portland-based business consultancy specializing in Market Opportunity Analysis and New Product Development.

(Professor Smalley, known as the Father of Nanotechnology, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1996.)

>From Rice University, Susan came to Tektronix, where she contributed to high-profile projects including a video projector for Tek's TV Division and seminal research in hot wax inkjet printing technology. Her efforts garnered four patents for the Tektronix portfolio.
